Weight Loss

Weight Loss Vs. Fat Loss

Weight loss is a particularly frustrating problem for millions of people. Understanding the difference between weight loss and fat loss is the first step in achieving a sustainable solution. I will take the time and make the effort to avoid a temporary weight loss result, only to have that person gain back all or more of the weight. Understanding that using the scale as the main measure of success or failure is one of the biggest mistakes my clients make. The weight on the scale represents fat, muscle, and fluid. Fluid changes resulting from dehydration or water retention can look like a false weight loss or weight gain. Our goal is fat loss so why measure use the scale to measure progress?

Metabolic Damage

Understanding the root cause of weight loss is so much more than a diet or meal plan.  The more times you gain and lose weight, the more you set up your body for metabolic damage.  The frustration of going on a calorie restricting diet which is uncomfortable – after all – who wants to feel hungry and craving all the time?  But the success of losing the weight feels so great.  Unfortunately it doesn’t last.  So many of my clients have lost weight and then gained it back and more.  It’s so frustrating!  This happens because your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) the calories you need every day for living like breathing, blood flow, etc. is regulated by the body.  So that when a person restricts by calorie counting, the body slows it’s BMR so that what once allowed a person to eat 1800 calories for maintenance, they now only need 1500.  This cycle repeats over and over – this is the metabolic damage that makes losing weight harder and harder as a person diets = regains weight – diets again.  I can get you off the diet rollercoaster. This happens without hunger – I will never allow my clients to feel hungry as that is a battle you cannot win.  Losing weight involves discipline and sometimes means getting uncomfortable.  But it does not involve feeling starving or restricted.

My Weight Loss Strategy

I will review your health history and labs to see if there is anything that is preventing you from losing weight or feeling your best. It’s not just weight loss – it’s mood and energy that we want to improve.

I take weight loss seriously as it is such a day to day mental, physical, and health challenge for so many people. As I have struggled with my weight all my life – gone on and off all the fad, crazy, diets chasing success and finally figuring out the best diet and lifestyle for me – I can understand your weight loss struggles like no one else because I have lived them and achieved success for myself. I can do that for you through a complete diet and lifestyle overhaul. Listening to your weight loss history, what has worked for you (or not worked for you) in the past, and what your goals are. I will explain any health-related issues like how to interpret your labs – cholesterol, liver enzymes, iron status, and more. Working with me involves an initial consult where I will take your history, review your weight loss wins and fails, listen to your goals and review your lifestyle to see the best way to approach weight loss to reach your goals.

Beyond Aesthetics Weight Loss

Unveiling the Profound Importance of Weight Loss

Weight loss is a topic that transcends aesthetics and reaches deep into the realm of health and well-being. While achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can enhance physical appearance, the significance of weight loss extends far beyond the surface. This article delves into the profound importance of weight loss for overall health, highlighting its impact on various aspects of life.

The Health Connection

  1. Reducing Disease Risk: Excess weight is a significant risk factor for a range of chronic diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and certain types of cancer. Weight loss lowers the risk of developing these conditions and can even help manage existing ones.
  2. Enhancing Heart Health: Weight loss positively influences cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol levels, and relieving strain on the heart.
  3. Improving Insulin Sensitivity: Shedding excess pounds can enhance insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and aiding in its management.

Quality of Life

  1. Boosting Energy Levels: Carrying excess weight places additional strain on the body’s energy resources. Weight loss can lead to increased energy levels and improved daily functioning.
  2. Enhancing Mobility: Weight loss can ease joint discomfort, enhance mobility, and make physical activities more enjoyable.
  3. Improving Sleep: Achieving a healthier weight often results in improved sleep quality and reduced sleep disturbances.

Emotional Well-Being

  1. Building Confidence: Achieving weight loss goals can boost self-esteem and self-confidence, contributing to a more positive self-image.
  2. Reducing Stress: Weight loss can alleviate stress on the body’s systems, potentially leading to lower stress levels and improved mental well-being.
  3. Enhancing Mood: Physical activity associated with weight loss releases endorphins, the “feel-good” hormones, which can positively impact mood.

Practical Tips for Weight Loss

  1. Balanced Diet: Embrace a diet rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats.
  2. Physical Activity: Regular exercise supports weight loss, muscle maintenance, and overall well-being.
  3. Mindful Eating: Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues, and avoid emotional or distracted eating.
  4. Lifestyle Changes: Focus on sustainable changes rather than quick fixes. Small, consistent modifications yield lasting results.

The importance of weight loss is a testament to its transformative impact on health, well-being, and quality of life. Beyond the surface, weight loss is a journey towards improved overall health, reduced disease risk, enhanced self-confidence, and a more vibrant and active existence. By making conscious choices, seeking support, and embracing a holistic approach, individuals can embark on a journey that not only sheds pounds but also paves the way for a life of vitality and well-being.

Tailored for Success

The Transformative Power of a Custom Diet from a Dietitian in Weight Loss

Losing weight is a goal shared by many, but finding the right path to success can be a daunting challenge. Enter the custom diet, a personalized eating plan crafted by a registered dietitian (RD). Beyond fad diets and one-size-fits-all approaches, a custom diet holds the key to sustainable weight loss. This article explores how a custom diet from a dietitian can be a game-changer on the journey to shedding pounds and achieving lasting results.

The Expertise of a Registered Dietitian

Registered dietitians are qualified professionals with an in-depth understanding of nutrition and its impact on health. Collaborating with an RD ensures that weight loss efforts are guided by evidence-based practices tailored to an individual’s unique needs.

Personalization for Success

  1. Assessment and Goal Setting: An RD begins by assessing your medical history, lifestyle, dietary preferences, and weight loss goals. This comprehensive understanding lays the foundation for a tailored plan.
  2. Customized Nutritional Balance: An RD crafts a diet plan that strikes the right balance of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats), micro-nutrients (vitamins, minerals), and fiber to support weight loss and overall well-being.
  3. Addressing Individual Challenges: Everyone’s weight loss journey is unique. Whether dealing with emotional eating, food sensitivities, or busy schedules, an RD’s expertise helps overcome hurdles.

Key Elements of a Custom Diet for Weight Loss

  1. Caloric Balance: An RD helps you determine an appropriate caloric intake that supports weight loss while ensuring essential nutrient needs are met.
  2. Mindful Eating: Learning to recognize hunger cues and practicing mindful eating can prevent overeating and foster a healthier relationship with food.
  3. Balanced Meals: An RD structures meals that keep you satisfied, stabilize blood sugar levels, and provide sustained energy throughout the day.

Sustainable Changes

  1. Lifestyle Integration: A custom diet goes beyond temporary changes. It encourages adopting sustainable habits that become an integral part of daily life.
  2. Progress Tracking and Adjustments: Regular follow-up sessions with an RD allow for progress assessment and necessary adjustments to ensure the diet remains effective.

Empowerment through Education

An RD’s guidance extends beyond the diet plan. Education about portion control, label reading, and understanding the impact of different foods on weight loss empowers you to make informed choices.

A custom diet from a registered dietitian isn’t just about numbers on a scale—it’s a journey to a healthier, more vibrant life. By harnessing the expertise of an RD, embracing personalized strategies, and adopting lasting changes, individuals can embark on a weight loss journey that’s as unique as they are. This tailored approach not only yields the desired weight loss but equips individuals with the tools to maintain their progress and embrace a healthier future.

“Diets don’t work. You should never be hungry.”

Common Questions

Looking at a goal of fat loss, not weight loss, it is possible to lose 1-2 pounds per week of fat – no more.  The rest would be a fluid loss.

The problem with heavy restriction whether it be from fasting or severe calorie restriction is that not only is not sustainable but it does more harm than good.  While initial weight loss happens, it is not sustainable and ultimately creates metabolic damage.

Exercise is awesome and I encourage my clients to do both cardio and strength training.  However, this is not what is responsible for weight loss.  80% or more of your success in weight loss will come from the food you eat (or don’t eat).  The rest is lifestyle – exercise, sleep, stress, and hormones.

I offer a package of that includes 5 coaching consults that I can do in person or virtually, or by phone.  The initial consult is an hour and the follow-up consults are 30 minutes.  In between I offer daily support via text and email.

I offer a Free Nutrition Consult which is a 30 minute Discovery Call to see if we are a good fit for each other.  My goal is to help my clients reach their health and weight loss goals in the most sustainable way!

My Approach & Philosophy

Are you frustrated with your inability to lose weight and/or keep it off? I know how you feel. One of the reasons I became a nutritionist/dietitian, is that I struggled with my own weight loss journey. I went on a diet, lost weight, and then gained it back – a cycle that I repeated over and over. I decided to take matters into my own hands and find out how to lose weight and keep it off in a healthy and sustainable way. I myself, lost and have kept off over 100 pounds. I know what it feels like to be unhappy with my weight and in my body. My own journey has helped me to help others who struggle. I have helped thousands over my last 25 years in practice achieve and maintain a healthy weight. It is lifechanging!

Over 95% of people who lose weight on a diet will gain all the weight back, and more. If you have experienced this frustration you are not alone. The most important thing I can do for you is help you find a healthy and sustainable eating plan – both for weight loss and weight maintenance. This will change the way you feel in your body, the clothes you wear and provide you with the energy to live life to your fullest potential.
