Crohn’s Disease Autoimmune Disorder

Childhood Crohns

Crohn’s disease is a particular type of inflammatory bowel disease.  It is an autoimmune disorder that occurs as a result of your body’s immune system attacking its own cells.

Symptoms include: Severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and fatigue.  Other symptoms include:  Anemia, arthritis, inflammation of the eye, and skin rashes.  You may experience a few or many of these symptoms and they may be mild or severe.  These symptoms may go into remission where you experience no symptoms at all.

Treatment Options include: Diet changes, multivitamins, quitting smoking, reducing stress, and various medications.  Medication options include:  Immunosuppressants, biologics, anti-diarrheal medications, and painkillers.  Understand that some medications may aggravate, rather than help symptoms.  For some patients, surgery is required.

I can assess your current lifestyle and then create a plan with you to help you improve/relieve your symptoms.  I understand that no two people with Crohn’s have the same experience and that helping you with an individual plan is key.  We can try several different tactics to assess your progress and then decide if adjustments are needed.

The research shows that Crohn’s can be brought into remission through a whole-food, plant-based diet.  Understanding that Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory condition makes it logical to try an anti-inflammatory diet for relief.

The most inflammatory foods are part of the American diet, and it may be a challenge to even consider removing them from your diet.

Inflammatory Foods:

Meat, Processed Meats, Animal-based Dairy, Sugar Substitutes, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Processed Foods / Refined Grains, Soft Drink, and Alcohol

Anti-Inflammatory Foods:

Leafy Greens, Vegetables, Mushrooms, Fruits, Legumes, Seeds, Plant-Based Dairy, and Nuts

Developing a delicious, satisfying, and sustainable meal plan and lifestyle plan is my specialty.  I understand that some people will feel so miserable that they will be motivated to make somewhat extreme changes overnight, while others will be more comfortable making small, incremental changes over time.  I can help you create a lifestyle plan, a diet plan that will effectively treat your Crohn’s and make you overall healthier.
